Purpose:
Recently theories of justice progressed remarkably through responding to challenges by social movements such as feminism, multiculturalism or cultural studies. Yet events like the catastrophe recently experienced in Fukushima, Japan raise questions for theories of justice. For example: can we continue to base our reactions on such notions as freedom, rights, equity, reciprocity and human security— all of which are pivotal to social justice— in catastrophic situations? Catastrophe, as it is understood here is not restricted to the type of evident calamity such as natural disasters, war or economic collapse. If we loosely define the concept of catastrophe as an experience which happens both accidentally and inevitably, or which brutally disrupts between the relation between ordinary and the non-ordinary, then there may have been many events which we should have recognized as catastrophes, but failed to. The purpose of this conference is to reexamine the modern theories of justice, their limit and possibilities in a broader angle in relation to the issue of catastrophe.

近年、正義論は、フェミニズム、多文化主義、カルチュラル・スタディーズなどの挑戦を受けて大きく発展した。だが、このたび日本のフクシマが体験したカタストロフィは正義論に新たな問いを突きつける。自由、権利、衡平性、相互性、人間の安全保障などこれまで社会正義の中心にあった概念は、破局的な状況において、はたしてどこまで有効性をもちうるのか、と。ただし、ここでいうカタストロフィとは、災害や戦争、経済破綻など、だれの目にも明白な惨事に限定されない。むしろその本質を、日常と非日常が荒々しく分断される体験、さらには、偶然であるとともに必然であると感じられる体験に見出すならば、カタストロフィは、われわれの生活のただ中に――それとして認識されることなく――存在することになる。本コンファレンスの目的は、現代正義論の限界と可能性をより広い視角のもとでとらえ返すことを目的とする。

Eligibility
Anyone from any country and any disciplines can apply. Graduates students, postgraduates fellows and recent graduates*are mostly encouraged to submit a proposal.

Submissions
Submissions should be in the form of an abstract of a maximum of 2 pages (500 words) and should be sent electronically to the following address justiceandcatastrophe (at) gmail.com [atを@に変えてください] Papers read at the conference should not exceed 25 minutes. Deadline for submissions is October 31 and the results will be made public by November 8.

Financial help:
The living expenses of speakers (hotel and food) for the duration of the conference will be taken care by the conference organization.

報告者に関しては、コンファレンス期間の宿泊、昼食＆夕食などはこちらで用意します。

Languages
Languages of the conference are English and Japanese. Submissions can be made in either of those two languages. In the case of Japanese, we will require English translation after the submission is accepted.

コンファレンスで使用する言語は英語と日本語です。報告はいずれでも可能です。ただし、日本語の報告概要で受理された場合には、後日に設定される期限までに長めの英文アブストラクトをお願いします。

2011年9月先端研国際ワークショップのお知らせ

来る2012年3月に、第8回先端研国際コンファレンス「カタストロフィと正義」が開催されます。それに向けてこの9月に下記の2つのワークショップをもちます。その目的は、社会・技術・自然環境との関係で広く正義概念をとらえ返すことにあります。
なお、Des Gasper氏は、同志社大学グローバル研究科主催の「人間の安全保障」学会(9月17日、18日; http://www.janp.sfc.keio.ac.jp/JAHSS/index.html)の基調報告者の1人です。あわせてご参加ください。
